| Subject: | HELP!! My Acrobat 6.0 won't work!! |
Hello!
I am a newbie to this forum, and I really need some expert help!
I have been using Acrobat 6.0 Pro on a Windows XP machine. Always worked great, no problems. Now it won't load. The initial screen comes up and the hourglass just rotates, never completing, just stuck half way open. I can't close the program using ctl-alt-del since it never completes loading. I then have to restart my machine, and when I do it says that there is a program called Font Capture running. (I have no idea what this is, and can't find it if I do a search of files and folders.) It will then ask and I tell it to close the program and it then restarts my computer. When it reboots and I try again it crashes the same way. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat 6, but it does the same thing.
I know Acrobat 6.0 is old, but I have no money to buy the latest greatest, so if someone; ANYONE can help me with this I will be eternally grateful.
Thanks for helping a newbie!!

Have you tried the "Add/Remove" control panel to repair Acrobat 6?

Hello gkaiseril!
First, thanks so much for responding! I was beginning to think no one reads this forum.
I think you're asking me if I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, and the answer is yes! By doing that I thought for sure that the program would work as it always had. But when I tried it, boom: it was exactly the same!! It would start to load, hang up, and my hourglass would just spin indefinitely. I could then close the partially open Acrobat using the bottom toolbar by my start button, (since it never really opened) but then, when I would bring up any other program and then close it there would be an afterimage the exact size of the Acrobat's opening screen of whatever file I had on the screen stuck on my desktop. For example if I had been working on a Word file, the center of it in the shape of the opening screen of Acrobat would be stuck in the middle of my desktop. So whatever icons were under the afterimage were covered and unusable. The image was right in the way.
I would then try to ctl-alt-del, and it would say that no programs were running. Since I couldn't use my desktop with this afterimage blocking my icons I would restart my computer, and it would then tell me that a program called "Font Capture" was running. Then I would click to close that program. When that closed it would then restart my machine, and when it completed the boot all was well. That is until I tried to open another pdf, and this crash would happen identically all over again.
Right now I have uninstalled my Acrobat again so no pdfs will crash my machine. How I wish that I could reinstall the program and it would work. So whatever this glitch is it won't go away with a simple reinstall. Do you have any other ideas? I really don't want to buy other software right now, but I use pdfs all the time, and now I can't use them at all.
Thanks again for trying to help me. Right now I'm pretty desperate!

Actually, I would have chosen the "Cahange" ooption, as this sometimes fixes some problems. Removal is a very last resort, because removal is very difficult as most uninstalls do not remove every piece of the corrupt application. Have you checked Adobe's Tech Support site for information on how to fully uninstall Acrobat.

This is a longshot but:
If you are on Win XP (or Vista, I think) and if you had System Restore
turned on you can activiate it (Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Too
ls)
and set it to restore your system to a date prior to this glitch offurrin
g.
It sounds like you may have had a dll blow up on you or perhaps some bug
got
in there.
Good luck!

Hi Guys, and thanks for your help.
No, I didn't even think to check out Adobe's website for uninstall information since this is an old product and I didn't think they would support it any more. And as to turning back the clock and going back to an earlier date, this has happened long enough ago that it's too far down the time tunnel. If I had done that right away that might have worked, but not now. I was counting on a reinstall to fix it if it was a blown dll, but no dice.
I agree that there are likely artifacts left after the uninstall that are keeping the problem happening, but tinkering with my registry is far above my limited knowledge and capabilities. To uninstall and reinstall is about my top level of tech.
I will look on Adobe's site for uninstall tips.
What I was hoping for was someone who has experienced this same kind of crash. But your ideas are very helpful, and I'll try what I can.
Thanks again!
