Subject:app.popUpMenu

Hi,
Suggestions please. I am scripting in acrobat 5.0
I want to use a pop up menu like app.popUpMenu. There are several fields on the form but the choices are simple. The fields are either image zone or print fields.
example script in mouse down event.
Choices = "";
Choices = app.popUpMenu(" ","mg", "mcg",
"gm", "kg", "cc", "iu");
if(Choices!= "" && Choices != null)
{getField("b12c96nfunits1").value = Choices;}

simple enough. The problem is the user can click out of the menu and is still able to enter a value on their own. I have added a validate script to verify only the choices in the list are allowed but I really want to not let them enter anything on their own and only choose from the list. I have tried other events with no luck. It is also a problem when the user tabs to the field. They can enter data without ever even seeing the menu. I know the combo box would work but I like the look of the menu list better.

If you make the field 'Read Only' the user can not enter any data, but you may need to put an invisible field over the field to allow for using the script to select and enter the data.

A combo box should also be used.

hidden field won't work. What do you mean invisible?

combo box won't work either and some of my fields are only 1 character fields but the selection needs to be show in it's full length such as 1 = "Modification since last course"

I only need to hold the "1" but they need to see the choices.

Make the field read-only, and define a button for the selection.

That should take care of it.

Hope this can help.

There are about 50 such fields on the form. That's a lot of buttons to create and a lot of real estate to take up and clutter the form.

In that case, why not use combo boxes?

It is your choice...

Hope this can help.

In order for a combo box to be useful. The field needs to be large enough to show the selection value.

Sounds like it's time to rethink the design of the form.

You make the fill color and border color "no color" and no label or any text. You also need to place this no color field over the RO text field.

You can also use the combo box or text field with a validation script.

You are either going to take up real estate or create a number of fields that trigger pop-up menus.

I have to say, gkaiseril's sample with the button, the first option on the sample he/she posted, is probable the closest to what you want. And it's pretty elegant as well.

I've used similar methods in forms of mine, but gkaiseril's is better. :)

Thank you for your help. I went with the button covering the field. It all seemed to work well until I added the button to the tab order. I wanted it so when they tabbed to the fields it would tab to the button as the other field was readonly. Now it seems no matter what I do the button is under the field so even though it is not readonly it can't be touched because the field is on top. What am I doing wrong?
